Protect Yourself From Identity Theft and Account Hijacking
Account hijacking is the fastest growing form of identity theft; however, chances are likely you will never be a victim of this crime if you know what precautions to take now. Account hijacking usually takes place when consumers receive a fraudulent email which seems to be legitimate. Many times these emails appear to be from established companies that many people commonly do business with, such as on-line auction companies.
These "phishing" emails look real and use legitimate company logos to make the email appear to be authentic. The email will ask you to click on a link and verify information. Sometimes the link may contain spyware which downloads itself to your computer. In this case, the spyware may detect passwords or other valuable information stored on your computer.
In other instances, the email link will take you to a web page asking you to fill in or verify personal information such as account numbers, Social Security Numbers, and credit card numbers. Remember, legitimate companies you purchase from on-line will NEVER ask you to verify personal information in this manner. Another tip to remember is to NEVER give your personal information to "companies" calling by telephone. Many times the callers will represent themselves as your bank, insurance company or other services all of us have, and try to obtain personal information from you. JUST HANG UP! The only time you should feel comfortable giving personal information over the telephone is when you initiate the call and know who you are calling (such as your bank, insurance company or government agency) and that the number is correct.
